Advanced Manufacturing of Medical Implants and Devices
Nigel Zheng, PhD.
BMR Leader
Center for Biomedical Engineering and Science
University of North Carolina at Charlotte

With rapid technology advancement it becomes possible for us to develop ideal medical implants and devices. Biological systems or the products of biological systems are used to generate new materials and devices, with a view towards scalability and industrialization.  These processes include the use of technology to generate biologically-relevant materials and devices.  The key is utilizing building blocks, materials or synthesis systems, such as via cells or related components, to exploit control that biology can provide over materials. This talk will discuss anatomical and physiological needs of both biologically- and biomechanically-adaptable medical implants and devices. Bioprinting and 3D printing of medical implants and devices provide us endless opportunities. Failure of traditional hip implants will be used as an example for the demanding of new advanced manufacturing technology.

Biography
Dr. Zheng studied mechanical engineering at Zhejiang University from 1978-1982 and currently is an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering and BMR leader of the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Before he moved back to Engineering in 2008, he studied and worked in the Department of Orthopedics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Saskatchewan, Canada, American Sports Medicine Institute and University of Florida. He received a clinical research award from Major League Baseball, young investigator initiative award from US Bone and Joint Decade, merit award from VA, AO Foundation. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers, recognized as the eminent scientist of the year 2003, served as the editorial board member of American Journal of Orthopedics, Chinese Medical Journal (English), and 5 other journals in the field of biomechanics, orthopedics and rehabilitation. Dr. Zheng is a member of Orthopedic Research Society, American Society of Sports Medicine Fellowship, American Society of Biomechanics and 8 other professional societies. His research achievements have been publicized by national and local newspapers and magazines, such as ESPN and USA Today.
